The Bolshoi Theatre of Russia comes to Voronezh on tour for the first time

The showings of the performance "The Taming of the Shrew" staged by a famous French choreographer, the artistic director of the Monte Carlo Ballet Jean-Christophe Maillot to the music of Dmitry Shostakovich performed by the troupe of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia will take place in Voronezh for the first time. The three showings will be held at the Opera and Ballet Theatre on April 16th at 7 p.m and on April 17th at 12p.m and 7 p.m.

This ballet became a special one in the creative career of the choreographer. For the first time, Jean-Christophe Maillot created a performance not for his own troupe. The Bolshoi's ballet "The Taming of the Shrew" toured in New York, London, Milan and other cities with great success. In 2015, the production was awarded the "Golden Mask" National Theatre Award in the "Best Ballet Performance" category. The tour of the Bolshoi Theatre in Voronezh is a special project of the Platonov Arts Festival, while its main programme should take place in June 2021.

The libretto is based on William Shakespeare’s play of the same name. In Mayo's production, "The Taming of the Shrew" is not a guide to suppressing a rebellious wife, it is a story about love, about the meeting of two incredibly strong and independent personalities who are not ready to put up with the conventions of the world around them. The set designer of the performance is Mayo's regular co-author Ernest Pignon-Ernest. The costume designer is Augustin Mayo (the son of the choreographer).

At the Platonov Festival, the performance can be seen acted out by two different cast of artists. In the evening shows (April 16th and 17th at 7 p.m), the main parts will be performed by the prima ballerina, the Honored Artist of Russia Ekaterina Krysanova (Katarina), the premier, the Honored Artist of Russia Vladislav Lantratov (Petruchio), the prima ballerina Olga Smirnova (Bianca) and the premier, the Honored Artist of Russia Semyon Chudin (Lucentio).

Ekaterina Krysanova and Vladislav Lantratov became the laureates of the "Golden Mask" National Theater Award for performing the parts of Katharina and Petruchio.

On April 17th, the leading soloist of the theatre Kristina Kretova (Katarina), the premier, the Honored Artist of Russia Denis Savin (Petruchio), the prima ballerina Anastasia Stashkevich (Bianca), the premier, the Honored Artist of Russia Artem Ovcharenko (Lucentio) and others will perform in the afternoon show on April 17th.

The prroduction features music by Dmitry Shostakovich. Being a great admirer of the composer's work, Jean-Christophe Maillot took the liberty of creating the score for the ballet using more than 20 various pieces of music from the works of Shostakovich. The performance will be held with the participation of the Voronezh Academic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the music director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre Ballet, the invited conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre Alexey Repnikov.

The ticket sale for the ballet showings starts on 20th February.

The director of the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet Makhar Vaziev:

 - The performance "The Taming of the Shrew" by Jean-Christophe Maillot which combines the geniuses of Shakespeare and Shostakovich, turned out to be very modern, close to today's audience. Jean-Christophe Mayo created this performance in Moscow, and our dancers became his co-authors.

We have visited several countries - Great Britain, Monaco, USA - with this performance. However, speaking without unnecessary pathos, I can say that touring Russia is very important for us. We come up with many special projects to keep in touch with the regions. And we will be very pleased to perform in Voronezh - a city with strong cultural traditions, where the art of ballet is loved and known.

We will be glad to come to Voronezh with our other performances: classic performances, some ballets by Yuri Grigorovich ... It would be great if our tour from a one-off event turned into a tradition.
